TECHNICAL STUDIES

“Industry Must Help"

(NZ. Press Association) WANGANUL Oct 11. Industry should help technical development by paying more attention to staff training, said the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) to delegates at the annual conference of the Technical Education Association of New Zealand in Wanganui today. Facilities should be extended to all cadets, apprentices, and young people who showed a capacity and desire to proceed with technical studies. Mr Tennent said. Time should also be allotted for study by day. "Industry should also consider the incentives it can offer to young people to improve their qualifications, and the rewards it is preoared tc give them when they have done so, and proved their worth,” Mr Tennent said. Recruiting Industry could also help colleges to recruit specialist teachers needed for new courses being established. "The teacher shortage about which we hear so much today is not confined to the primary anad post-primary schools.” he said. “Industry as a whole must be prepared to set aside some of its experts to teach the many technicians required in the future. I know that industry generally is sympathetic. and much help has already been given. But more is wanted.” said Mr Tennent. He hoped that if a request was made to a particular firm for the release of a particular expert for an hour or two a week in the dav time, it would be granted. “You cannot leave everything to the Government,” Mr Tennent said.
