There had never been a test like the West IndiesAustralia match at Brisbane last summer, and there will probably never be another with such an agonising buildup of drama and suspense. In Australia, J. H. Fingleton is the best of the cricket writers, and a book by Fingleton on this wonderful match is an irresistible combination. The Greatest Test Of All, (Collins; 96 pp, and a statistical summary) will be read eagerly, and enjoyed thoroughly, by cricketers everywhere. Fingleton writes with distinctive charm, and singular understanding. The beautiful batting which marked this match, and the series wins full tribute from Fingleton; but no artist ever had a better subject. The incredible events at Brisbane and elsewhere will still make hearts beat a little faster, even in the reading. Fingleton has more to say on cricket, cricketers, and cricket problems, and the illustrations are magnificent. In the last astonishing over at Brisbane, there were three dismissals, and they are all shown in pictures, even the black and white prints bold something of the magic of the occasion. “The Greatest Test of AH’’
is as exciting as a first-class thriller—even if the riddle is solved when it is posed.
