One of New Zealand's most popular women athletes, Mias Jennifer Thempein, has retired. The present New Zealand discus throw record holder and silver medallist at the 1968 British Empire Games. Miss Thompson has found the demands of her new post as physical training instructor at Otahuhu College too great to continue with competitive athletics. Miss Thompson will be remembered for setting the present national discus record of 171 ft 4jln, in a tense struggle with Mrs Young (nee Sloper) in misty rain in the 1960 New Zealand championships at Rugby Park.
One of the South Island's most promising table tennis players, Miss J. Wallace again had a successful season in the South Canterbury representative side.
Two seasons ago Miss Wallace attended the national cbaching school for juniors. She has also taken an active part in administration of the sport in Timaru.
The former Canterbury crjcketer, B. E. Hitchcock, enjoyed one of' his best seasons with Warwickshire in the last English
cricket season. A vigorous left-hand batsman, Hitchcock scored 1840 runs in first-class matches, his; best aggregrate since he; began his career for the county in 1950. ★ Jimmy Carruthers will have his second fight since his come-back to professional boxing when he meets the Australian! feather-weight champion, j Wally Turner, at the Syd-’ ney Stadium on November 13. Twenty-two-year-j old Turner turned professional after he won a gold | medal at the Empire. Games at Cardiff in 1958. Last month Carruthers was outpointed over 12 rounds by the Italian boxer, Aldo Pravisani.
