Pentathlon Hopes

Mrs V. L Young, the most accomplished women athlete in field event* in New Zealand. will give more attention tn the pentathlon in the coming season. but she hope* to represent New Zealand in the shot put and discus at the Empire Games at Perth.

Mrs Young has been in constant training for the pentathlon through the winter months under the guidance of her coach, Mr V. Briedis. A former New Zealand New Zealand title holder Mrs Young has always had an interest in the pentathlon and will contest the event at the Canterbury and New Zealand championships next year. There are signs that the pentathlon may be included at the next Olympic Games at Tokyo in 1964, but perhaps it is too far aheaod at the moment for Mrs Young to consider taking part. The New Zealand record is at present held by Mrs A. Mclntosh of Auckland with a total of 4054 points. Before the event was accepted for New Zealand records Mrs Young smaied 4204 pointe under an international table.
