Incentives Provided (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 5. The most sought after and pampered women in Britain today are shorthand-typists. There are three times as many vacancies as there are women to fill them. This means they* receive salaries of £8 or more as Soon as they leave the secretarial school at the age of 17 or 18 and they can be selective about their jobs. If for any reason they are dissatisfied they can hand in a week’s notice and easily get another position. Their salaries rise to about £l5 a week at the age of 25.

They expect to be offered various enticements—cheap or free lunches or luncheon vouchers; three weeks’ holiday every year instead of two; two early evenings a week and no work on Saturday mornings. Some large firms employ a hairdresser to see to shampoo and sets on the premises. New buildings are being equipped with comfortable rest rooms with changing rooms and showers for girls to dress leisurely for their evening date. AU this adds up to the type of advertisement seen in a London evening newspaper recently: 'Two confidential secretaries wanted. Flat provided.” Death oT Mr Feast—Sympathy was extended to Mrs H. S. Feast in the recent death of her busband, when the committee of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society met recently. Mrs Janet Williams spoke of the outstanding help given the society by Mr Feast during his term as town clerk.
