UNIYIKSITY VACAHCItt THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, CANBERRA. APPLICATIONS are invited for enrolment as research students. Applicant should be graduates witn capacity for research. Some scholarships are ottered for competition among those wishing to enrol. Students may enrod for the PhJJ. degree (the course for which extends over 3 years) or for the degree of MA., MEc., LL.M. or MSc. (a one or possibly two-year course). Scholarship will normally be extenaeo tor Ute whole period at the course. The scholarship allowance is £AS<S per annum tax free for scholars enrolled for a Master’s degree and £A9SO per annum tax free for those enrolled tor a Ph-D degree tor £l37* per annum for scholars with appropriate medical qualifications). INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED 1 STUDIES (students will normally enrol tor tile PhD. degree)— (a) The John Curtin School of Medical Research: Biochemistry, Experimental Pathology. Medical Chemistry. Microbiology, Physiology, Physical Biochemistry and Biological Inorganic Chemistry. Work is being carried out on intermediary metabolism, cardiovascular disease, immunology, heterocyclic chemistry, pox and influenza viruses, neuropnysiology, neuropliarmacology, electrolyte regulation, hormone assay, muscle cell electrochemistry, physical chemistry of connective tissue and proteins, and the chemistry of metal chelates. (b) The Research School of Physical Sciences: Astronomy*. Geophysics*, Mathematics, Nuclear Physics*. Particle Physics* and Theoretical Physics. Investigations are proceeding on the Southern Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds; stellar spectroscopy; igneous petrology, geochemistry and isotopic age determinations; rock magnetism; phase equilibria and deformation of rocks and minerals at high pressures and temperatures; low energy nuclear physics involving work with a 12 MeV Tandem accelerator, a 33 MeV electron synchrotron and two other machines of 1 MeV and 2 MeV respectively; plasma physics and 10 BeV accelerator design and construction; theoretical problems in nuclear, high energy and plasma physics. (c) The Research School of Social Sciences: Demography (Including social and cultural aspects). Economics (including Economic History and Economic Statistics), Modern History, Law. Political Science (including Public Administration), Philosophy (including. as well as the traditional branches of philosophy, social and ' political philosophy, the philosophy of education, the logic of the natural and social sciences and of history, the history of ideas), Sociology, and Statistics (including Mathematical Statistics). (d) The Research School of Pacific Studies: Anthropology and Sociology (including Oceanic Linguistics), Economics (especially of under-developed areas), Far Eastern History (China and Japan )•*, Geography (most branches but not at present with any emphasis on soil geography and climatology). International Relations, Pacific History (including contemporary studies of government) and the New Guinea Research Unit. •Ph.D. candidates only. ••A substantial knowledge of the relevant language is a pre-requisite. SCHOOL OF GENERAL STUDIES—(a) Faculty of Arts: English, French Language and Literature*. Geography. German Language and Literature*, History, Mathematics (generalised functions, hydromagnetic theory, dynamics of stellar systems), Oriental Studies (including Chinese. Japanese, and Malayasian language and 1 civilisation), Philosophy (including ethics, logic of the social sciences, philosophy of science, philosophical psychology, aesthetics). Psychology (social psychology, group behaviour, learning and personality theory, the counselling relationship, thought processes and perception), Russian (Soviet studies). (b) Faculty of Economics: Economic History (especially Australian economic history since 1900, history of economic thought since 1600), Economics (particularly input and output, capital market), Statistics (particularly time series analysis and economic interpretation of statistics). (c) Faculty of Law: Australian Constitutional Law. Commercial Law, Property Law. (d) Faculty of Science: Botany (Eucalyptus ecology, plant taxonomy and physiology), Chemistry (natural products. synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, protein synthesis, co-ordina-tion cherrlstry). Geology (igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, inverte- » palaeontology, stratiy, economic geology). Mathematics (see Arts above). Physics (solid state, particularly metallic diffusion and ionisation in gases). Psychology (see Arts above). Zoology (invertebrate nutrition, parasitology, fresh-water ecology, general physiology). •Masters' degree candidates only. Application forms and further particulars are available from the University.
