N.Z. Lamh Price Again Rises

Prices again rose for New Zealand lamb at Smithfield Market, London, this week, according to the market information service of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board.

This occurred in spite of continuing substantial supplies of home-killed meat. Prime lamb 281 b and under rose by Id a lb, while the main export grade of 29-361 b rose by l|d a lb. There were increases of up to Id a lb in the heavier grades. There was a moderate inquiry for light pitchings of New Zealand mutton with increased prices. Wethers were at lOd to 13Jd a lb. while ewes were at 9d to 12d a lb.

Dairy production recovered to record . levels for the month of August, but for the two months of the season to date was slightly behind last year, according to the dairy industry bulletin. Emergency duties will be imposed from today on polyethylene and paper cones to protect the local industry from lower-priced imports. The announcement said the temporary duty on paper cones of the type used in the spinning and weaving industries will be 8d per lb. The temporary duty on polyethylene is additional to a 3d emergency duty imposed following a recommendation in May. The new duties conform to recommendations of the deputy-chairman of the tariff board (Mr H. F. B. Heyes). Mr Heyes said in his report that Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand, the only Australian manufacturer, and Union Carbide which would begin production this month, had more than, £6 million invested in the industry.
