Fewer Crayfish
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 6. Declining crayfish stocks m New Zealand waters were causing considerable concern, the Minister of Marine (Mr Gerard) said in the House of Representatives today. The South Island haul in earlier years had been from easily-caught virgin stock-: but the position now was no: satisfactory, he said, speaking on his department’s estimate;
Fisheries research would be increased to £31,000 this year, said Mr Gerard. The fish export licensing system, controlled by the department, was not working satisfactorily and there was a move afoot to simplify it, he said.
