CYCLING N.Z. ROAD TITLES ON WAIKARI COURSE

The national road cycling championships will be held on Friday and Saturday. The juniors will race on Friday over 50 miles and on Saturday the seniors will compete over 100 miles. The course will be a block of about *l6} miles at Waikari. It is very exacting with some short sharp hills, level and rolling country. The circuit is tar-sealed all the way. Forty-two riders will contest the junior event and in this Canterbury representatives have every chance. Canterbury is fielding a full team of 10. The main hopes for the junior title are L.

Manners (Avon), the provincial champion and W. Thorpe. R. Mann. R. Bush, and K. Jones, all of the Papanui club. The other five are all good but they may find the pace a little too strong. In the early stages they could be of great assistance to the other members, Canterbury Senders Canterbury has no outstanding seniors by national standards but. with a team of 10, it could make it difficult for the 38 visitors. P. Wood (Avon), the Canterbury 100mile champion could have a chance. He is a good tactician. G. Hill (Christchurch), who has had success in long distance races this season, has a very strong sprint and if he is up with the leading riders at the finish and is well positioned he could easily win the title. The other Canterbury riders would require a lot of luck. The strongest riders appear to come from West Coast North Island. The team of A. Ganderton. N. Anderson U Crystall. G. Lankow and L. Payne is a formidable one. Last Saturday Payne became the first rider to take first place and fastest time in the Round-the-Gorges event. From Wellington are two outstanding riders, J. Holloway and R. J. Peoples Holloway is the Wellington 100mile champion and Peoples is the national champion. Auckland has R. Johnstone, an Empire Games representative, and T. Morris, the 100mile champion. The Otago-Southland team is led by the veteran H. Hubber, who finished second in the Timaru-to-Christ-church race. C. Bremner, who gained fastest time in l the 100-kilometre event at Waikari knows the course well. G. Sycamore finished well up in the Round-the-Gorges event but the other members of this team have not shown any form this season. The senior championship will also serve as a trial for the Empire Games but the main trial will be held on October 12 and 14 with riders named by the national selectors after the race on Saturday. Kaikoura Race Off The Christchurch Cycling Club has announced that the annual Christchurch to Kaikoura race will not be held this year. Because the race clashed with the Palmerston North-Wellington event it was felt wise to abandon it.

Question Asked On Television Fee (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Oct. 4. Persons experimenting with television sets where signals from New Zealand channels could not be received regularly were still liable for the annual fee of £6 10s, said Mr P. Blanchfield (Labour, Wes'land) in the House of Representatives today. He asked the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Kinsella) whether he . would refrain from collecting this fee until a regular television service was provided. Mr Blanchfield said that many experimenters were spending their leisure usefully in building receivers, only to obtain freak patches of reception, but still remained liable to prosecution unless the fee of £6 10s was paid.
