TEAM-WORK WAS BASIS OF TECHNICAL'S WIN

QOLID team-work and the sound coaching of the former international, Mr V. Smith, were responsible for Technical’s winning of the Hurley Shield soccer competition this season. For the last nine seasons the Hurley Shield had been won by Western.

Technical is one of the city’s larger clubs, and much of its success is due to the solidity of its reserve play-

ers. Several of these, including B. Chee. R. Higham and A, Chee, fitted into the first division side 'Well, when called upon. Technical’s inside forward trio of A. Verham, E. Charlton and W. Shannon, was the foundation of its success. These three have achieved a good understanding and combination in several seasons together. With 28 goals, the 1980 international, Charlton,

was the season’s leading scorer in club matches, and Shannon took sixth position with l 4 goals. The side made two fine gains this season with the return to Christchurch of the former Canterbury and South Island player, W. Logan, and the transfer from Gisborne of the Eastern Union and Poverty Bay captain, D. Waugh. Logan gave good service on the wing and Waugh, after some matches at centre-forward while Charlton was injured, settled down to give very good service at full-back.

K. Flintham in goal gave consistently good displays, and is one of a number of very fine custodians in Canterbury. In another province he would surely have made the representative side. The former Canterbury player, I. Graham, was again hard to pass at left full-back.

Two young players in K Hendy and G. Jones, as wing-halves, combined well with the inside forwards. At centre-half was the bullocking R. van Dalsum, a strong player who was never far from the bail.

J. Campbell earlier in the season, and later Higham. filled the left-wing berth adequately. B. Chee showed great improvement at winghalf.

In the Hurley Shield competition Technical had nine wins, four drawn matches and one loss. The loss was to City in an eighth round match when Technical, trying to play a controlled game in emulation of the recently, touring Englishmen, was bustled into a 5-3 defeat The drawn matches were with Western (two), Shamrock and Rangers.
