N.Z.-Bred Horses’ Randwick Success

New Zealand stayers made a good start for the Dominion to-the spring racing in Australia by winning the two major staying races at Bandwick at the week-end. Summer Fair won the A-J.C. Derby after a protest on Saturday and Waipari (8-10) won the Metro-, politan on Monday. Summer Fair, a colt by» Summertime from Reuter, by Paper Boy, was bred in the Waikato by R. B. Miller and was sold to Australia for lO&Ogns as a yearling in 1960.

.Waipari, now a seven-year-old, is owned in New Zealand by Mr J, G. Sutherland and is in Australia under the care at his New Zealand trainer J. WicAtiitt. Summer Fair, Waipari is by Summertime, one cd New Zealand's leading sires. Their wins on Saturday gave two important firsts to Summertime, which has been New Zeeland's leading sire for the last two seasons. Summertime had sired a Great Northern Derby winner, Gitano, and the Great Northern Oaks winner, Summer Sari, but had not had a winner of either the Metropolitan or the AJ.C. Derby. Summer Fair, a typical Summertime colt, showed great gameness on Saturday in a battling finish with another New Zealand-bred colt. Blue Era. He went down by a short half-head, and was promoted to first after a protest of foul riding against M. Schumacher, rider of Blue Era. Like- others of Summertime’s stock, Summer Fair has proved Bis ability over a variety of distances. As a two-year-old last season, he was well above average, winning the last four of his seven races and finishing out of a place only once. The Otafti owner-Oreeder of Commanding and Castlerae, Mr G. S. Walton, acting as agent for the Australian owner, Mr P. R. Pierce, paid 1050 guineas for Summer Fair at the National Yearling Sales at Trentham in 1960. At the same sale, Blue Era was a bargain colt. Mr M. Marshall, of Melbourne, bought him for 350 guineas. A chestnut, by Blueskin 11, Blue Era is out of Until, which, like Summer Fair’s dam Reuter, won five races. Until is by Vaals from Wait and See, the winner of eight races including the waitakerei Handicap at Avondale in track record time.

- King's Choice, the dam of - Reuter, was lightly raced but i all five at her progeny to e race have been winners. 1 Sir Fox won six, Derrye ague won five and a half, f Singing Hills won four and v Sari won three. Ticker Tape, an older halfy brother to Summer Time, has o been a winner in Queensa land, and the Heathcote Hane dicap at Riccarton was among Reuter's wins. a Another Now Zealand-bred • winner at Randwick cm Satt uraay was Dalriada, for- - rnerly trained by A, E. Did--1 liam for the New Zealand - owner, Mr D. McFarlane. !. Dldhsm. is now back In New Zealand, training at 1 Wingstfii, and Dalriada is i owned by a Sydney barrisr ter, Mr E S. Miller. a -Dalriada is a five-year-old i grey {elding by Kurdistan t from Aganev. He won two I, races for Mr McFarlane, but it Saturday’s win was his first g in eight starts for Mr Milr ler. The three New Zealand - wins on Saturday were an r even more promising start rto the spring metropolitan s carnivals than New Zealand e horses made last year, when .- the Australian colt Persian s Lyric won the Derby and it the outsider Red Wind beat Waipari in the Metropolitan, r but New Zealand stayers > went on to win most of the g main staying events, includn ing the Caulfield and Cend tenary Melbourne Cups. r .
