Recognition Appeal To U.S.

(N .2 JI.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 3. The United States Government is still considering the new Syrian regime’s request for diplomatic recognition, while keeping a close watch on developments in the Middle East state.

The State Department spokesman (Mr Joseph Reap) told his press conference yesterday that the request for recognition had reached Washington on Sunday through the American Consul-General at Damascus. He said he did not know when a decision might be taken on it.

The “New York Times" said in a Washington dispatch today the United States Government probably would recognise the new Syrian regime by the end of the week if the new Government had fully established its authority. The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore “Sun” quoted “reliable sources” as saying the United States was reluctant to extend hasty recognition to the new Syrian Government “for fear Cairo propagandists would seize on this as evidence that this country fostered Syria's breakaway from its union with Egypt.” U.N. Seat Syria yesterday took the first moves to regain her United Nations seat, United Nations observers said in New York. Mr Kuzbari said in a cable-

gram to the President of ths United Nations General Assembly (Mr Mongi Slim), that his Government firmly adhered to the principles of the United Nations. Syria was a member of ths United Nations in its own right before the United Arab Republic was created in February, 1958, after which the seats of Syria and Egypt were merged in a single seat of the U.A.R.
