CELEBRATION IN PEKING

Anniversary Of Republic (NXPX-Jlenter-Copyrirttt) PEKING, Oct. 2. More than 500,000 persons yesterday paraded through Peking’s Heavenly Peace square to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the founding of Communist China. Communist leaders including the party chairmgp (Mr Mao-Tse-tung) and the Prime Minister (Mr Chou-En-lai) reviewed the eolourftil parade. The two-hour procession Included children, students, workers, militia, athletes, singers, dancers and models displaying industrial progress. Officials said more than 1000 foreign guests from many countries including Poland, Albania and Hungary were in Peking for the celebrations. But there was no official Soviet Government or Communist Party delegation present The keynote address was given before the parade by Peking's Mayor, Mr Peng Chen, a leading member of the Politburaau. China had scored “tremendous achievements in the socialist revolution and socialist construction** in the last 12 years, particularly since 1958, he said. “In 1961 we have achieved further new successes on the basis of a big leap forward,’’ he said. In agriculture, he said, people’s communes “have manifested themselves more and mere clearly in overcoming natural calamaties and achieving leaps forward in agricultural production.’’ He said current difficulties “instead of hindering our advance, will only stimulate our fighting will to overcome them one after another and march forward from victory to victory,’’. Attacking America, he said United States imperialism ■was using all means to isolate and commit iggrrssion against China. Those hostile and opposed to China, however, were only a handful and were “doomed to defeat.”
