WAIPARI, SKY HIGH WIN AT RANDWICK

SYDNEY, October 2. The New Zealand stayer, Waipari, made amends for his dismal failure in last year's Caulfield Cup by winning the £lO,OOO Metropolitan at Randwick today. Last year Waipari started favourite in the Metropolitan and finished secbnd to Red Wind. Today he started at 15/1, after being backed in from 20/1, and won by half a length from the favourite, Gemstone (11/4), with Valerius a length and a quarter away third. Waipari ran the 13 furlongs in knin 4>Jsee—a second outside the Australian record for the distanoe. Waipari. which is hard to handle, gave a great exhibition ot staying. On today’s run Gemstone would be hard to beat in the Caulfield Cup. Valerius ran a splendid race to be third. He finished faster than either Waipari or Gemstone.
