Table Tennis Wallabies I And Eagles Finish Equal

Two teams, Wallabies I and Eagles, finished equal with four wins each when the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s A grade subsidiary competition was. completed last evening. Players were not certain whether the two teams would be bracketed for first position, or whether Wallabies I would take the competition on a count-back of games. In last evening’s matches, Wallabies I beat Avonside I, 12-0, and Eagles beat Wallabies n, 7-5, in the major section. In the plate competition University If beat University I, 7-5, and for the other match neither Avonside II nor Avonside 111 appeared, University H with three wins won the plate competition. In a thrilling encounter, Eagles beat Wallabies II in the last match. R. McLachlan was the best of the winning team and took three singles matdies. He received solid support from J. Armstrong, who won two singles. Armstrong was beaten by M. A Cox (Wallabies ID in a Jong game. Cox took a handy lead at 18-13 in the third game, but Armstrong caught up to lead at 19-18. Loose shots, lost him the match in the final stages. Cox played a determined game, and his forehand hitting was consistent

McLachlan gained a very easy win over N. B. Radford, a highly-ranked player whose performances have steadily deteriorated in the last few weeks. He beat Cox narrowly, and K. F. Stevenson very easily.

In the final of the plate section between the two University teams, University II trailed, 4-2, and won the next five matches for a victory. The province’s two best younger players met when D. J. Kalin beat M. J. Coppen. Kalin, who moves very well to the ball played fewer loose shots than did Coppen.

Coppen was not quite at his best.
