Pools Dragged And Drained
(N Z Pre.u Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Police dragged one pool and drained three others at the Wellington Zoo as they continued the search for Wendy Mayes today. Little hope is now left of finding Miss Mayes alive. She has now been missing from her home at Whites Line east for 14 days. Nevertheless police search parties, under the control of Inspector W. A. McGuire, are consistently checking all scrub country and likely areas in the Wellington and Hutt districts hoping to find some trace of the girl. The original nucleus of between 50 and 80 men is still engaged in the search. Many reports of floating objects in Wellington Harbour were immediately investigated by the launch Lady Elizabeth, from the Wharf Police branch. The objects reported invariably turned out to be driftwood or wooden boxes, however. The officer in charge of the search. Detective Chief Inspector W. S. Craigie has said that he will search for as long as possible. Operations have now slowed to a mere checking of Information tendered the police by the public.
