Board Policy
Stated
The statement by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) to toe committee of inquiry into the taxicab and rental vehicles in. dustries that toe Christchurch Transport Board wished to take over the licensing of taxicabs was entirely incorrect, said the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) at the board's meeting yesterday, Mr Manning must have been misinformed, he said. The board’s submissions, read to the committee and circulated, showed clearly that the board did not seek to take over toe licensing of taxis in Christchurch. The board agreed that Mr Manning’s statement should be corrected publicly because it could lead to misapprehension of the board’s true policy.
Mr Fardell quoted from the recommendations of toe board made to the committee of inquiry as follows:
“The board recommends that the jurisdiction of toe Metropolitan Licensing Authority for taxis and rental ears should not be transferred to district authorities because the taxi operations are—with few exceptione—confined wholly to the metropolitan districts in which they are licensed. "Furthermore, the jurisdiction should not be transferred because the taxi service, which can be direct competition of publie transport, would be obtaining their licences from a different source. The taxi licences should be issued by the authority of the area in which toeir enforcement ia controlled*
