“BLUE SLIP” MOVING
Encroachment On Main Road A phenomenon, interesting to engineers and geologists, the “blue slip” north of Kaikoura has begun to move again. In the last week it has moved 10 inches and nafrowed the main road between Blenheim and Kaikoura.
The resident engineer of the Ministry of Works (Mr A. M. Peart) said yesterday the movement, not serious at present, had been caused by the recent heavy rain. The slip had been stable for about five years. Mr Peart said the movement was not actually a slip Rather it was a gleeler at bentonite clay which became slimy when heavy rain fell. As it became fluid It began to move down the hill-side in a gorge between high hills.
When the tongue' at mud encroached on tbe road to the last major movement it was held in place by stone gabions. The recent movement moved some of the gabions and some trenching would have to bo done on the side to take any mud that was brought down, said Mr Peart. He said ho did not expect the movement to stop for a month or two but there was no danger toe road would be blocked.
