Tara Singh Ends Fast

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) AMRITSAR (Northern India), October 1. Tara Singh, the 76-year-old militant Sikh leader, today broke his 48-day fast by sipping fruit juice and honey. He ended the “fast unto death” after assurances that the Government would investigate alleged discrimination against Sikhs, Reuter reported.

Leaders of almost all shades of Ihdian political and religious thinking ended a fourday meeting in New Delhi today designed to find ways of welding the nation together.

They adopted a report calling for reshaping of the educational system to promote national unity. They also offered a code of conduct for political parties, calling on them to eliminate appeals to religion or cast to win elections, the Associated Press reported. The conference set up a permanent “National Integration Council” headed by the Prime: Minister (Mr Nehru) to periodically review the situation.
