TOLL LINK TO COAST

New Circuit

Ready Soon

A three-channel carrier system to give the first direct telephone toll link between Christchurch and Hokitika is being built by the Bost Office, and should be put into service within a few weeks. At present,* Hokitika traffic is routed through Greymouth, so the new system will give relief to the GreymouthChristchurch service. The Post Office also has an authority for an extra onechannel link between Christchurch and Akaroa, but equipment for the job is not yet to hand.

On Saturday, three new carrier circuits were brought in linking Ashburton and Mayfield. Three new channels between Ashburton and Methven are almost completed and should be in service within a fortnight. A 50-line extension to the Diamond Harbour automatic exchange has been authorised, and is expected to be installed by the end of the year. This will bring the capacity of the exchange to 150 lines.
