New St. Andrew’s Rector
Mr lan Thomas Galloway, OBE.. E.D. M.A., Dip Ed., of Paraparaumu, has been selected as rector of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, to succeed Mr L. W. Stewart, who will retire in May, 1962, after 40 years’ service with the college. This was announced by the chairman of the board of governors (the Rev. S C. Francis) Mr Galloway was educated at Wellington College and the Victoria University College. He has held teaching appointments at Raumati Dis. trict High School; Kapiti College, <here he was first assistant; and be was recently selected as principal of the new Upper Hutt College, but will not now assume this appointment.
The reetor-eleet has an out. standing record of military service. Commissioned before the Second World War
in the territorials, he served in the Pacific and Italian campaigns, returned to New Zealand in 1946. and rejoined the Territorial Army in 1949 as officer commanding the Wellington Squadron. Ist Armoured Car (New Zealand Scottish) Regiment. He became second in command of the regiment in 1954 and was appointed commanding officer in 1958.
Thi-ee years later Mr Galloway was promoted to command the 4th Armoured Brigade with the rank of colonel, and in 1960 he was promoted brigadier in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade.
Mr Galloway has placed senior Rugby and cricket. He has coached extensively inthese games and also in athletics. swimming, tennis, and life-saving : He has done executive wctrlt in scouting and surf life-saving Mr Gal In wav is an elder: and Jay prelaeher in the Presbyterian Church and. fori seven years, was a member: of the General Assembly's
worship and architecture committee. He is married and has five children.
