Peter Ryan Beats Moss
(N.ZJ>.A.-Rcvt«r—CopvrigM) ORONO (Ontario), Oct. i. The Canadian driver, Peter Ryan, won the first Canadian sporta car grand prix in a Lotus 19 yesterday. Ryan, who is only 21,' covered the gruelling 250 miles over the 2.5-mile Mosport Park track in 2hr Mmin Msec.
Mexico’s Pedro Rodriguez. who is also 21, was second in a three-litre Ferrari Dino in 2hr 46min 45sec, but covered only 99 laps, one fewer than Ryan, according to a Canadian Press report. Stirling Moss, of Britain, was third in another Lotus 19, in 2hr 47min 25sec for 99 laps. An unscheduled pit stop was Moss’s downfall. He set a lap record of Imin 34.25ec as he tried furiously to catch up.
He had earlier been locked in a tense duel for leadership with Olivier Gendebien (Belgium), also in a Lotus 19. The lead changed hands between the two 22 times.
Gendebien was ahead by almost two laps when he retired with mechanical trouble on the eighty-third lap. •
Only 14 of the 27 cars which started finished the rtce.
Bob Holbert, of Pennsylvania, was taken to hospitalafter his Porsche RS6I crashed in a three-car smash on the first lap. He was not seriously injured.
