NORTHERN ZONE COLTS WIN
South Out-classed Most Of Game
As a curtain-raiser to the inter-island hockey match on Saturday a game was played by colts teams representing fairly similar but not the same areas. This resulted in a win for North by six goals to three. For much of the game North dominated the play, and goals were scored fairly frequently, chiefly because of a very loose defence by South. In the final Quarter South came more Into the picture, and a series of lively attacks produced three goals, two of these being scored by very clever and skilful play on the part of B. Russell (Wellington) who was the best forward on the field.
The most prominent players In the Northern team were the backs, R. Balfour and N. F. Austin, the centre-half, J. R. Leash and the left-wing E. Salmon who was responsible for some neat and sensible passes. D. Davis also proved a quick opportunist at centreforward, but his trapping was unreliable. In the South team, in addition to Russell. L. Smith showed flashes of useful stickwork at inside-right, and C. Broadhurst used his speed to advantage on the left-wing. The defensive plav was weak, lacking organisation and adequate covering, with insufficient attention to guarding the circle area. The umpires were Messrs N Hocking and K. Wright.
