Master Alan Wins President’s Handicap At Hutt Park

'The Press" Special Service

WELLINGTON, October 1. Master Alan, driven by M. Holmes, won the President’s Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double on 9he first night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Hutt Park Raceway on Saturday. Given the perfect trail. Master Alan got clear at the top of the straight and held off the favourite. Jay Ar, by half a length. The Jarge and close-run-ning field cost several runners a chance, including Orient Night and Slick Chick. Jay Ar, Dew Heath and to a lesser extent Ballista, were all forced over extra ground. The second leg, the Pressmen's Handicap, was won attractively by Dark Wonder from Mary Mavis, with the favourite, Axis, making up a tremendous amount of ground for third after an early break. Master Alan, a small, compact four-year-old trained at Oamaru by G. R. Here, has plenty of courage and Saturday’s was his second win in three starts this season.

Jay Ar began brilliantly, but starting the last round was one of the tail-enders.

Slick Chick at this stage was just ahead of him, with Orient Night not much better placed. Only six runners paraded for the second leg, the feature of which was the running of the strong favourite. Axis, which made a gallant attempt to overcome an insuperable handicap incurred by breaking at the start. Atthe post he was only two lengths and a half from the winner, Dark Wonder, which trailed the pacemaker Dora Scott all the way.

The two trotters’ races provided good finishes. John Seott winning the Welcome Handicap after being three-quarters of a furlong from the leader at the end of two furlongs. Ahumai. Front Line and Safety Catch fought out a nose and head finish to the Flying Sportsmen Handicap, passing the post in that order with Wairau King and Van Art.ee about a length back. The small fields and small dividends resulted in a decline In betting, but there was an attendance of 7900. The totalisator on-course handled £5B 335 15s. a decrease of £25.002 15s. As usual at Hutt Park the trainer. C. S. Donald, had a good night, winning with three horses, each of which he drove. M. Holmes had two winning drives. The night was cool and fine, and improved a great deal when a keen wind died down just before the racing started. The track was fast. Began Brilliantly Dew Heath broke at the start of the President’s Handicap and. Jay Ar began brilliantly. Medium Blue was the early leader, but after a furlong Major Star took control, leading the field through the straight . the first time from Master Alan. Medium Blue. Serpentine. Dark Signal. Brookdale King Anjou. Orient Night. Slick Chick. Jay Ar, Havana Smoke. Pa Data wa and Ballista. Brookdale moved into third equal at the mile. At the half it was Major Star, Medium Blue and Master Alan, then Brookdale, King Anjou. Serpentine. Orient Night. Ban Ist a. Slick Chick. Papatawa, Jay Ar and Havanna Smojjp.

Master Alan ran on well to win by half a length from Jay Ar, with a length to Slick Chick. Major Star, Orient Night and Dew Heath were close up next, then Serpentine. Medium Blue. Ballista and Dark Signal. Second Leg Axis broke at the start of the Pressmen’s Handicap and Dora Scott went to the front from Young Albion, Mary Mavis, Dark Hanover (outer) Lynwood Earl and Axis, which was 30 yards back. After a round Axis had caught the field and beginning the last round it was Dora Scott. Young Albion and Mary Mavis (outer). Lynwood Earl and Dark Wonder (outer), then Axis.
