ANTARCTIC TOURS
Support For Suggestion
Antarctic tours were far from being a pipe-dream, said Dr Paul Siple, an American authority on the Antarctic. said in Christchurch yesterday. “If you were to take one of those comfortable little inter-island ferry boats during mid-summer and load it with tourists I think you would pay for the boat to one trip down," be said. Advantages to make Antarctic tours an attractive proposition included the fact that there was “protection" by the United States aircraft and ships travelling between the two countries. It was
only a week’s journey to the Antarctic in mid-summer and there was little ice to worry about. Dr Siple said there were many persons wishing to make such a trip During International Geophysical Year. Chile sent a plane load of tourists to the Antarctic and later a ship from the Argentine made the trip. “It was ao classy that they dressed for dinner aR the way down “ he said.
