Young British Tennis Players
'T'HE young British tennis x player, M. Sangster, could be a big attraction if he visited New Zealand next January as Suggested. Although he was ranked only fourth in Britain last season, behind E. Knight, R. Wilson and J. Drobny, and equal with R. Becker, he has in recent months achieved more than any British player for several years. It has been suggested that Sangster, aged 22, and another young British player, R. Taylor, visit New Zealand after playing in Australian tournaments. It has also been suggested that test test matches might be played between Britain and New Zealand. Sangster visited Australia last season and distinguished himself when he beat R. Mark in the Australian titles before going out to F. Stolle. When he returned home he
beat both I. Pimentel, of Venezuela, and Stolle in the French championships before going out to M. Santana, of Spain, the eventual winner.
Sangster then gave a very fine performance at Wimbledon and surprised even his British supporters. He beat D. Rateton, of the United State* in the third round, A Segal (South Africa) in the fourth, Ptmental in the quar-ter-finals before losing to C. McKinley (United States) In a semi-final. Since then he has also reached the semi-finals of the United States title and when he test to R. Laver, 11-13, 5-7, 4-8, he gave the Australian one of hi* hardest matches of the year.
Taylor reached the third round at Wimbledon where he was eliminated by n. Emerson.
