Wool x sold at Christchurch last season gained the highest average price per lb of any wool selling centre in the country. The Christchurch average was 41.165. Next was Invercargill with an average of 41.11 and then Dunedin with 41.078 d. Wellington with an average of 40.919 d was fourth and top of the North Island averages.
In fairness to the north it has to be noted that South Island offerings include a sizeable proportion of finer wools which still command a slight premium over coarser wools but one that is fast disappearing. Noting Christchurch’s return to the top of the pole, the “Annual Review” of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., says that this centre has now- regained the pride that had to be swallowed in 1959-60 when her position in the averages was a humble No. 6.
