New Library Space For Periodicals
A tender of £2655 has been accepted by the city council to build mezzanine stack accommodation at the Canterbury Public Library. At present the stack accommodation consists of about 2000 ft of shelving on which there are stored the flies of more than 500 periodicals. The mezzanine accommodation will double the storage capacity of the area, which is now filled to overflowing.
During construction, the files most frequently consulted will be kept on top of the shelves in the reference library, “an untidy and awkward arrangement, but one which will keep them more or less accessible.” said the City Librarian (Mr R. N. O’Reilly). Some important periodicals will have to be moved and go out of circulation temporarily.
