MURDER IN ALGIERS
French Police Official (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) ALGIERS, Sept. 21. A police Chief Superintendent, Mr Alexis Goldenberg, attached to the French Delegation General, was shot dead in central Algiers last night while driving his car. Witnesses said Mr Goldenberg’s car was overtaken by another car and a motorcycle. A shot was heard and Mr Goldenberg’s car crashed into a wall.
He • was still breathing when passers-by rushed to his car. But police said a bullet had lodged near his heart. He died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. In an incident in the Casbah earlier, a Moslem restaurant owner was shot dead.
There were four plastic bomb explosions in the city during the day. They caused damage but no casualties. A further 16 explosions occurred after dark, bringing the total for the day to 20.
