TWO PEOPLE AFLOAT,—Peter Hamilton resigned a commission in the Royal Navy to buy a yacht and sail it round the world. After seeing a yacht with which he fell in love, he bought it, fitted it out, and sailed it alone to Canada. There he laid it up and returned to England to marry. With his wife as crew he sailed his yacht down the eastern seaboard of Canada and the United States and through the Panama Canal into the Pacific. There, the yacht visited the Galapagos, Pit cairn, and eventually Tahiti. In “The Restless Wind” (Blackwood), Peter Hamilton tells the story of the whole venture: the purchase of the yacht, his meeting with the girl who became his wife and crew, days at sea, the raising of the wind in the financial sense, the meeting of interesting people and communities (with a fascinating account of Pitcairn), and the sale of the yacht at Los Angeles after the return voyage across the Pacific. Mr Hamilton’s pen is equal to describing an entertaining series of events, and, his readers will share the enjoyment of the voyaging. The pictures show:—TOP LEFT: The yacht Salmo leaving Montreal. BOTTOM LEFT: Mrs Hamilton enjoying the beach at Tahiti. RIGHT: The Hamiltons in their cabin.
