Benmore Tyre Repairs

Expected to result in considerable savings, a tyrerepair depot to cater for a huge fleet of earth-moving machinery has been established by the Ministry of Works at the Benmore hydro-electric scheme. It will be open for public inspection tomorrow. The picture shows the first tyre being treated. It is being fitted into the vulcaniser. From a scraper-loader, it is 7ft 6in high, weighs 18001 b and is valued at £l3OO. The depot, which began operations last week, is not equipped to deal with retreading, but will concentrate on the restoration of

tyres which have been badly cut by stones and rough surfaces encountered by the earth-movers on various parts of the Benmore project. One of the features at the Benmore machinery parade tomorrow will be a tyrechanging contest. Using two 18001 b giants, between Min-; istry of Works’ and contractors’ employees working on the project. Whoever wins and in whatever time the job is accomplished, the time will be claimed as a world record for this feat, on the assumption that no-one has ever thought of holding such a contest. The best unofficial time to date is a little more than 20m in.
