Spring Millinery Festival At New Brighton Trots

Canterbury’s spring millinery festival was ushered in at the New Brighton racecourse on Saturday, when horses running in the New Brighton Trotting Club’s September meeting gave up the birdcage to eight models and a horse-drawn landau. Wearing glamorous examples of new-season hats and smart ensembles, four of the girls were driven along the course in the black landau, while the other models paraded in the birdcage.

The dramatic “My Fair Lady’’ and sou'wester models, a preftty cerise toque, and new interpretations of summer straws drew comments of approval from the big crowd. The “My Fair Lady’ models were seen in both black and white. The white was a pouff of chiffon caught on to the crown in folds, with a big full-blown white rose across the front brim. Glossy dark green leaves added a touch of colour. It was worn with an ensemble of junior navy—a slim dress with a blue and white silk bodice and two buttons trimming a wide waistband, and a coat finishing three or four inches above the hem of the dress. The coat bodice was gathered from a high waistband. and the soft line carried into push-up sleeves. The black interpretation featured a visor brim and a huge bow across the front. It was teamed with a black three-piece suit in light wool, finished with a black velvet cravat. Beautiful pink tones, from cerise to shell-nink, were seen in a high pillbox covered with petals. This was worn with a pearl-grev lightweight dress and jacket ensemble with black accessories.

A dramatic sou-wester model with a hand-whipoed edge, a knot of satin holding an upswept front trim and a long curved back line made a perfect match with a twopiece suit of black raw silk. The suit jacket featured false front panels caught with

buttons above side pockets, and a straight middle panel.

A senior model wore a very soft pink head-hugging hat of cloudy nylon, folded in tiers and with tiny pink flowers caught into the folds. She wore her hart with a black boucle coat featuring a detachable satin portrait collar. which slipped through slots to form a tie in front. Pink gloves and black shoes and handbag completed her outfit.

A sparking, all-white ensemble consisted of a pleated nylon and chiffon toque, a heavy corded cotton collarless coat, and a lurex tricel sheath frock. Red shoes added a touch of colour to this model’s ensemble. Two models showed the ex. citing use of different shades of purple in new-season hats and ensembles. One wore a cool confection of verv coarse, forest green net. with spravs of violets trimming the enormous, satin-bound brim. With it she wore a parmaviolet linen suit, with a lavender, gold and white silk blouse.

Another wore a deepbrimmed straw in two shades of purple lavender and parma. The crowd was swathed with lavender satin finishing in a bow in front, and the outer brim, in the same shade, was stitched with parma. A lavender wool coat, cut on straight, soft lines, complimented her hat.

The models who took part were Roma Palmer, Susan Kellaway. Peggy Holden, Patricia Fernandez. Marjorie Baird. Graine McConnel,

Yvonne Cummins and Lesley Nichols. Most women race-goers wore their winter hats, suits and coats. A few honoured

the warm, sunny day with new-season suits and hats. These were mostly .tall, folded straws, with a sprinkling of boaters and souwesters in varying styles. The wife of the club's president, Mrs A. E. Laing, chose a coat of leaf-green, accentuated on the collar with a velvet trimming of deep forest green. She wore a high pill-box hat covered with pink and white florets, and black accessories. The wife of the vice-presi-dent, Mrs W. F. Stark, chose a light green suit cut on easy-fit lines, with buckled tabs giving pocket interest. It was teamed with a matching peach-bloom hat with a tiny stitched brim. Guests of the club in the women’s box included Mesdames A. McDonald, K. Brown, L. R. Dunster, G. J. Francis. J. B. Jenkins. E. Osborne, S. J. Moore, D. Smith, A H. Spratt, M. C. Magee, W. M. Ollivier. B. J. Wilks, M. T. Dixon, E. A Lee, D. M. Tyree. S. D. Shubart, R. W. Saunders and M. W. Wills.
