FEW ACCIDENTS AT BENMORE
Emphasis Laid On Safetv J (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU Sept. 17. Although he had not as yet had the opportunity of making a complete analysis of figures which he had obtained in connexion with accidents at the Benmore power project, it was quite apparent that because of the emphasis on safety, the number of accidents since the scheme started had been very small, said the Medical Officer of Health at Timaru (Dr. W. I. Glass), last week. Dr. Glass said that the Ministry of Works was responsible for an exceptionally well-run safety device, and took pride in the fact that there had been no deaths. As far as occupational health was concerned, the most notable thing about Benmore was the lack of injuries, he added. There had been an odd case of industrial dermatitis. and some cases —not strictly notifiable —of foreign bodies in eyes. "Tlie facilities at Benmore are among the best in the country," Dr. Glass continued. A first-aid room on the site was manned by a qualified assistant, there were two ambulances. and scattered all over the project site were first-aid boxes. “I am perfectly happy about the setup.” said Dr. Glass. Actual industry was small — with welding, woodworking, and vehicle maintenance shops—but the exhaust system in the welding shop was the best he had seen anywhere. Dr. Glass continued. “Each booth has a duct with movable exhaust hood which sucks the fumes away from the welder’s face," Dr. Glass added. Nor has Dr. Glass any reason for dissatisfaction in regard to the general health of the inhabitants of Otematata. There is a doctor at the village, and a Kurow doctor makes regular visits. The Department of Health has t» school medical officer at Oamaru who visits Otematata in relation to school medical work, and a public health nurse is. stationed at Otematata. She cares for 569 primary school children and 68 secondary school chidlren as well as pre-school children. ..
