U.S. NAVY DISPLAY
Big Attendance At Harewood Climbing almost vertically at 42,000 ft a minute a jetassisted Hercules aircraft was a feature of the United States Navy’s display at Harewood yesterday. For almost eight hours people queued before aircraft and inspected cold weather clothing, photographic and weather displays. The “Portrait of Antarctica” film was screened six times. The feature of both the morning and afternoon activities was the “talk down” landing of the Hercules aircraft using the ground control approach system. Jato bottles were attached to the aircraft for extra thrust. Sixteen bottles used in the morning caused the aircraft to take-off after using only 900 ft of runway. In the afternoon only eight bottles were used.
Movie cameras on the control tower, on the runway and inside the aircraft recorded the take-off for television. Aircraft on display included two Hercules, a Globemaster, a Rescuemaster and a United States Army helicopter. Hundreds of cars used the emergency car-parking area. Traffic officers said the busiest build-up occurred about mid-afternoon when cars were almost bumper-to-bumper along Memorial avenue.
