C.O.R.S.O. APPEAL
Record City Response The C.0.R.5.0. clothing appeal in Christchurch on Saturday met a record response. Almost 50 per cent, more clothing was given than in 1960. “We have been quite delighted with the result,” the area organiser for C.0.R.5.0. (Mr G. H. Coley) said last night. The previous Saturday’s postponement, due to bad weather, was probably a blessing in disguise. The fine weather for the second attempt. and the apparently increased public concern over recent world events produced an unexpectedly generous response, said Mr Coley. Clothing gifts in outlying areas, including Ashburton, Rangiora, the Ohoka district, Kaiapoi and Akaroa. also showed an increase. This week about 1000 volunteers, mostly women, will undertake the huge task of sorting, examining and Packing the clothing for distribution overseas.
This year clothing will be sent to Syria and the Lebanon for distribution to Arab refugees, to refugee camps in West Germany and Austria and to Hong Kong. South Korea, India and Pakistan.
More than 4000 children from nearly 60 Christchurch nnmary schools took part in Saturday’s apneal. Some bundles of clothing mav have been inadvertently missed during the collection an “ organisers of C.0.R.5.0. would appreciate these being delivered to the council’s headquarters at 94 Gloucester street (near the National Airways Centre) at the Addington collecting centre or at various depots around the citv listed in the council’s circular distributed recently to city householders Mr Coley said.
