Work Praised By Bishop The work done in secret by members of the Catholic Women’s League was highly praised by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) at the C.W.L. jubilee luncheon on Saturday. “I have been intimately connected with the league all through my priesthood and I am deeply conscious and very grateful for the ‘hidden’ works for those in need and for the charity of Christ,” Bishop Joyce said. “We are justly proud of Our representatives in civic organisations, which do so much work for the community at large,” he said. Members were better Catholic women by belonging to the league. Bishop Joyce said that it was now necesssary to think of the future in a practical manner, and expressed the hope that the jubilee would be the start of a crusade of recruitment, and Of enlarging the work already begun. ■ About 270 attended the luncheon, which was the first function to the league's silwer jubilee celebrations. The

celebrations have been arranged by the president of the Christchurch Diocese C.W.L. (Mrs J. P. Donelly) and her council.

Specially invited guests included the Bishop: the Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. Kennedy: the Very Rev. Father T. Liddy; the Very Rev. Father T. Kane; the national president of the C.W.L. (Mrs B. O’Brien), and the national secretary (Miss G. MicDavitt). Members of C.W.L. branches in the Christchurch Diocese attended, including some from Timaru and Ashburton.

Guests were welcomed by Mrs Donelly. The toast to the league was proposed by Monsignor Ken. nedy; and Mrs O’Brien replied. The first president of the first C.W.L. branch in the diocese. Miss E. Le Lievre lAkaroa), proposed the toast to past presidents; Miss K. O’Connor, a past president, replied. Mrs J. E. Amos proposed the toast to the clergy, to which the chaplain (the Very Rev. Monsignor T. Liddy) replied. The jubilee cake was cut by the Bishop.
