First Half Of 1961 Big increases in the number of births, deaths, and marriages during the first six months of 1961, comEared with the same period ist year, are shown in a report released by the Government statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Births were up by 1558 — there being 32,115 during the first six months of this year, compared with 30,557 in 1900. There were 10.322 deaths—773 more than last year. Marriages solemnised totalled 10,043. compared with 9828 for the same period last year.

During the June quarter of 1961, there were 15,815 births, comprising 13,907 Europeans and 1906 Maoris. There were 209 still-births (European 188, Maori 21). The total number of deaths was 5626, comprising 5258 Europeans and 102 Maoris.
