An Act OF Mercy
The good works of the Sumner lifeboat have on one occasion even extended to .the rescuing of a small boy who injured an ankle while bird-nesting.
In 1953 a 13-year-old boy fractured an ankle when he fell 30ft while bird-nesting on the face of a cliff at Sumner.
Police and traffice officers were unable to remove the boy with ropes because of the jagged overhanging rocks, so the lifeboat went under the cliff to take him off.
