ZOO HOLIDAY PROBLEMS
Boy Tried To Give Bottle To Hippo “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, September 3. A schoolboy who tried to throw a soft drink bottle into the open mouth of the Auckland Zoo hippopotamus Kabete had been restrained just in time, said the administrative director of city parks and reserves, Mr G. Dean. Kabete is the three-ton father of the baby hippopotamus born at the zoo last week. Because this incident and other trouble with youngsters had been reported in the last two days, said Mr Dean, a keeper had been put on duty watching school holiday crowds at the hippopotamus compound. “We will take the strongest action against anyone caught doing this sort of stupid thing,” said Mr Dean. “A hippopotamus died at the zoo some years ago after being fed tennis balls.”
