Representative Matches In Lower Grades

Several Canterbury lower grade representative teams played matches on Saturday. Results were:— Canterbury under-20 14, Nelson 3. ’ Canterbury juniors 28, Hurunui 12. North Canterbury under--20 18. Canterbury under-18 8. North Canterbury under17 3, Canterbury under--16 3.

Playing at Lancaster Park South, Hurunui provided stern opposition to the Canterbury junior XV, scoring the first two tries and leading, 9-5, at half-time. The juniors gained the upper hand in the second half, however, and went on to win comfortably. The forwards, in particular, showed good form, hunting together we'l in broken play. For the juniors, tries were scored by R. Carr <2), R. J. Vivian, D. Banks, W. Hendry, and R. Moffatt, Banks converting four. J. Niven, J. Trumpter, and A. Finlay scored tries for Hurunui and G. Bruhns kicked a penalty goal. Convincing Win

Playing in the curtainraiser to the Canterbury v. Auckland game at Lancaster Park Oval, the Canterbury under-20 team scored a convincing win against Nelsen At no stage did the visiting ride appear likely to unset the lively Canterbury XV A. WyUie. the powerful St. Andrew’s College feward, scored two tries for Canterbury and converted one of them. B. Inwood and M Jefferson also seared tries. For Nelson, D. Miller scored a try. The more powerful North Canterbury under-20 team accounted for the Canterbury under-18 representatives at the Amberley Domain, after Canterbury had held a halftime lead of 8-5. The heavier North Canterbury side gradually took command in the second half.

N. Doody, the North Canterbury centre, scored two tries and three conversions for his side, and B Thomas and E. Chamberlain also scored tries. For Canterbury, P. Sharr scored a try. P. Samms converting and kicking a penalty goal. Although giving away weight and experience to its opponents, the Canterbury under-16 team held North

Canterbury’s under-17 side to a draw at Amberley. Both sides scared a try in the first half and the second was scoreless. The Canterbury defence was equal to the task in this period, D. Niven, the full-back, setting a fine example. Canterbury’s try was scored by P. Burns, and S. Bowerinig scored for North Canterbury.
