Ski-ing At Night

Ski-ing at night by the light of flaring torches illuminating the gates of the slalom course is something of a novelty on New Zealand ski fields, although it is a well-known European ski tourist attraction. Last week members of the North Canterbury Ski Club held a night slalom in the Broken river Basin which attracted an entry of three women and 16 men and about 30 others to watch the spectacle. With about a quarter-moon and a clear sky, the course showed up from the top of the tow as 15 pairs of twinkling lights against the snow. As each competitor went over the course a rocket was fired as the starting signal. After the race a group of skiers made a long serpentine sweep down the basin carrying flares and the club’s newly-built jump was baptised with fire by Mr Rudy Wyrsch making a spectacular jump of about 40 feet carrying a burning flare in each hand.
