Tremors In Peru

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) PASADENA (California), September L An underground disturbance which a scientist at Basel University, Switzerland, said he thought came from ceptral Asia, was actually in Peru, the seismological laboratory at the University of California said last night. A spokesman for the laboratory said the Basel scientist “must be mistaken about the direction” of the centre of the two shocks felt on Wednesday night. Records at Pasadena showed that the centre was in the direction of Peru, not central Asia. The times at which it was recorded coincided with those recorded in Basel, In Washington, inquiries at the U.S. State Department and other interested American agencies produced no comment on the reported disturbances, and no confirmation that they might be nuclear In origin. There have been published reports suggesting that the tremors might have been caused by a Soviet nuclear explosion. More Advertising. More than £36 million was spent in newspaper advertising in Britain during the second quarter of the year, according to official figures. This compares with £35,500,000 in the first quarter.—London, September 1.
