SWEDE WEAKNESS
Lack of reliability of swede crops on relatively fertile soils was described as “a weak point” by Mr P. M. Falconer, an adviser to the Lauriston Farm Improvement Club, at the club’s annual meeting recently. Many farms, he said, needed only one to ten per cent, of their area in swedes if there was a good crop and accordingly he felt it was important to explore all aspects where there were crops of 10 to 20 tons to the acre when they should be at least 40 tons.
Reporting that this year there had been further evidence of seedling damage in root crops by springtails and wheat bugs, Mr Falconer said it seemed that these pests might be of greater significance than had been thought and it was intended to carry out a number of trials next
