1961 Rice Bowl Appeal Of Save The Children Fund
The 1951 rice bowl appeal of the Canterbury branch of the Save the Children Fund will aid prospects in Hong Kong and Korea. This was announced at a meeting of the branch yesterday, after a letter from London headquarters, requesting support for two projects in the area, had been read. So that the initial benefit gained from feeding at treatment centres, and hospital treatment will not be lost after persons return to their homes, the money will be used in Korea for follow-up work. Individual families receive food and clothing and children will continue to receive milk and medical care in their own homes. In Hong Kong, the money will be used for a food and recreation centre. Five hundred children will be cared for daily at the centre, which will provide a full meal, a supplementary meal and a safe place to play. The fund needed Canterbury sponsorships for children in Greece. Austria and Italy, the president of the branch (Miss M. Havelaar) said yesterday. "There are many families in desperate positions in these countries,”
she said. She cited one Austrian family in which four children had tuberculosis. The father had returned home from the Second World War with the disease, and was now critically ill. With the rapid growth of the fund's work in New Zealand, a definite constitution was needed, Miss Havelaar said She would tour the North Island next month, accompanied by Mrs J. L. Hazlett, to try to unify all branches. Constitutional and policy discussions would be held.
Miss Havelaar and Mrs G. Faii-weather will attend a public meeting in Blenheim next week, where it is hoped a branch of the fund will be inaugurated. Three members of the Canterbury branch will study a copy of the London headquarters constitution, and draft rules which could apply to Canterbury. Further arrangements for the stall in October were made at the meeting.
