Sir, —Some 50 years ago (Iffiave no idea of the date) a poll of ratepayers was taken in Christchurch to buy land from the Bank of New Zealand to widen this congested spot, as some farsighted men saw the need, even then. I can remember my father being disgusted at the proposal being defeated on the ground that “it would increase the rates.”— Yours, etc., GRASP OPPORTUNITY. August 25, 1961.
