T.E.A.L. Photographic Competition Results

An Australian and a New Zealander shared honours with first equal placings in the Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd., twenty-first anniversary photographic competition, results of which were announced yesterday. The Australian, Father Leo Dundon, of Port Lincoln, South Australia, chose as his winning subject a water ski-ing scene, and the New Zealander, Mr O. Petersen, of Swanson. Auckland, submitted an early-morning scene at Milford Sound. One of the most successful entrants was Mr R. V. Francis Smith, of Christchurch. who gained a third place and seven of the merit awards The third-placed entry was an attractive lake and mountain study taken in the Dart valley, Otago Central.

The first and second prize money, totalling £75, will be divided evenly by the entrants who shared first prize. An additional fourth prize has been added. This was won by Mr E. C. Wilson, of Svdney. with a photograph of Pacific island palm trees taken by the Levuka lagoon in Fiji. Merit awards were won by Mr E. J. S. Dudgeon with a photograph of Nelson harbour and the Mount Arthur range, by Mr H. Sieben, of

Wellington, whose subject was the “Wallaroo Jetty— South Australia,” and Mr T. S. Withers, of Lautoka, Fiji, with a portrait of a Fijian boy. The competition attracted 83 entries from New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji, and included a wide range of scenic studies as well as sporting subjects and portrait entries.

The judges. Mr F. Hofmann, a leading Auckland photographer and New Zealand photographic judge, Mr A. Thompson, New Zealand manager of the British Travel Association, and Mr T. Bolster, publicity manager of T.E.A.L., said there were at least a dozen pictures in the competition which could have' qualified for the top three or four places.
