INTEGRATION OF MAORIS
Assurance By Mr Hanan
Racial integration would 'not mean the knell of the Maori, or Maori identity, said the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) when opening a conference of Christchurch young Maori leaders last evening. “The Maori language, for jone thing, will survive for a long time yet—pnssiblv for ever. The retention of the Maori language is not incomnatible with integration, and the retention of Maori identity certainly is consistent with equality.” he said. • “In ensuring that you enjoy racial equality, we are not trying to put you in a pakeha uniform,” he said “We realise what suits one race does not suit another." Maori policy had to be looked at through Maori eyes, he said, and the extent to which the Maori people changed or merged their identity was something that they themselves would have to determine. “I can assure the Maori people that the Government will not impose any policy that will force them' to shed their identity.” said Mr Hanan.
