Magistrate’s Court HAIRDRESSING SALON FINED FOR AWARD BREACH

For failing to record in the wages and time book the hours actually worked by three assistants on September 20, 1960, Frederic Maeder Pty., Ltd., proprietor of a hairdressing salon in Colombo street, was fined £5 by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The defendant company, wipch was represented by Mr P. G. S. Penlington, pleaded guilty. Penalties of £lO and £5 were granted the Inspector of Awards on two breaches of the Canterbury Female Hairdressers’ Award. Complaints had been received that the award was not being observed by the company, said Mr G. D. Jensen, who prosecuted for the Inspector of Awards and Inspector of Factories. The salon was visited by inspectors at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. September 20, and three female assistants were still working. They should have finished work an hour before. The assistants had said that they had been allowed half an hour for lunch and none for tea, Mr Jensen said. Inspectors examined the company’s wages and time book on November 1, and the actual hours and overtime worked by the three assistants on September 20 were not shown. Women’s hairdressing salons in the centre of the city had to give the service to compete with those in the suburbs, Mr Penlington said.

The trade was highly competitive, and there were about 80 salons in Christchurch. M was not possible to run a salon to strict hours. “Many of the customers are young girls who do not finish work until 5.30 p.m„” said Mr Penlington. “Some of the suburban salons are also working in breach of the award.” Frederic Maeder Pty , Ltd., which ran a large number of salons throughout New Zealand, had been singled out, Mr Penlington submitted. ■ The company had not been singled out, Mr Jensen said. Other salons had taken note of warnings, but this one had ignored three. (Before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.) ON ENCLOSED PREMISES When police entered an unoccupied house at 34 Bath street at 1.40 ajn. yesterday, they found two men asleep on a mattress, and on the floor were two flagons of beer, said Sergeant V, F. Townshend. Joseph William John Ockwell, aged 43, and Jack Pirimona, aged 24, pleaded guilty to being unlawfully on enclosed premises. They were convicted and remanded to August 25 for sentence.

MOTORCYCLIST WARNED “You are a fool,” the Magistrate told Lawrence James Le Compte, who was convicted of three motor-cycling offences, bringing his total convictions to eight. Le Compte. a glassmaker, was fined £5 for exceeding 30 miles an hour, £3 for not having a safety helmet, and £2 for carrying a passenger not wearing a safety helmet. He pleaded guilty to the charges. The prosecutor. Traffic Officer L. King, said Le Compte committed the offences on New Brighton road on August 11. His speed was recorded at 45 miles an hour.

Le Compte said he was trying to clear a “sticky” carburettor.

“You’ve got a sticky past now, as well as a sticky carburettor,” said the Magistrate. “You are a fool. Do you think you are entitled ■to a licence?”

The Magistrate warned Le Compte he would risk losing his licence if he appeared before the Court again. OTHER TRAFFIC CHARGES
