Subsidies

Sir,—l write on behalf of those living on social security benefits. I recall a month or so ago that Professor Danks was hinting to the National Government that it should reduce subsidies, social security benefits, and State housing loans. Now it seems that the Government is considering these points, and they say that they may have to do these things. Some of the Nationalists say that Social security is costing too much. What about the Cook Strait cable? What about reducing the subsidies to the wealthy farmers to bring their fat stock to the shows? Why should the Government come back on those living on the lowest rung of the ladder? I consider that the Government Should go to the people before they take such steps.—Yours, etc., A. J. LILLEY. August 22, 1961.
