BARRISTER CHARGED

Alleged Theft Of (NX Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 9. A ' former Auckland barrister and solicitor, Robert William Tennent, aged 29, now a company manager, appeared in the Magistrate's Court at Auckland today for the preliminary hearing of a series of charges. Tennent elected trial by jury cm all seven charges which he faced—-five of theft by misappropriation and two of theft by failing to account for money he received. The total involved in the charges is £I4XIB. The hearing, during which 20 witnesses are to be called, is before Messrs R. S. McMillan ?nd H. M. Israel, J.P.'s. Mr G. A. Dallcw appeared for the police. An application by Mr R. P. Smeilie for interim suppression of Tennent's name was refused. Arthur Eric John Anderson, an accountant, secretary of the New Zealand Law Society, detailed the results of an investigation which he carried out into claims made by former clients of Tennent. Including some interest the society paid out a total of £liL2sB 13s 5d to the claimants. A number of witnesses gave evidence of having made payments to Tennent in connexion with house-buying transactions. They said they were reimbursed by the Law Society. The hearing will continue tomorrow.
